Biennial of the Americas focus on Visual Arts

At the end of the month Denver kicks off it’s inaugural “Biennial of the Americas,” a signature event planned by the Mayor’s office and intended to further advance the honorable cause to recognize our city as “the” place to be.

The big-kahuna for visual arts during the Biennial is the central exhibition “The Nature of Things” featuring 24 artists from countries throughout the America’s (except Canada, see below…..). Curated by Paola Santoscoy, an art authority from Mexico City brought on board specifically for the Biennial, the exhibition responds to the overarching themes of innovation, sustainability, community and the arts, with a diverse roster of artists from across the Hemisphere (except Canada) presenting different perspectives within a single space. The exhibition will be installed on all three floors of the McNichols building, one of the defunct landmark buildings at the entrance to Civic Center Park. The building’s 28,000 square feet of exhibition space will feature 24 works in a variety of media, including paintings, sculptures, video art, and mixed-media installations.

The City of Denver will also install temporary public art in relation to the McNichols building. A large netted aerial sculpture by Artist Janet Echelman, inspired by a National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) simulation of the earthquake’s ensuing tsunami, floats high above the traffic of downtown Denver, suspended between the Denver Art Museum and Civic Center Park. Echelman’s monumental installation “1.26″ engages with issues of temporality and interconnectedness surrounding the 1.26-microsecond shortening of the day that resulted from the February 2010 Chile earthquake’s redistribution of the earth’s mass.

A number of locations will also have programming that is specifically supported by the Biennial through grants. The “official community partners” will provide programming tied into and promoted by the Biennial primarily through their website and facebook page. And since the Biennial is not solely focused on the visual arts, in fact one might say that’s just a small component of the affair, the community partners form a broader level of engagement with the arts and ideas.

At Plus Gallery we bring you Canada. We received a grant for our exhibition of the top-level Canadian Contemporary Artists, a concept initiated by our general fondness for the talent found up north as well as the knowledge that we might pair up with the Canadian Consulate here in Denver to really pull out the stops. So for most of the month of July (as well as August), Plus Gallery will be considered the “Canadian Pavilion” for anyone seeking a new and worthy visual art experience.

Some of the other community partners that are also developing a visual arts platform include Plus Gallery neighbor Redline, which will host an exhibition titled “Artists Footprints,” curated by Viviane Le Courtois. Those who know Viviane are likely aware of her fetish for sustainably-minded footwear, and so it goes in keeping that the exhibition will focus on sustainability, transforming Redline into a test site for sustainable art making with explorations into the idea of food, habitat and resources in the lives and works of contemporary artists. The exhibition sounds very ambitious, and includes local, regional and international artists.

A lot of people may remember Capsule gallery from the early days of Santa Fe Drive, and pioneered by former Plus Gallery artist Lauri Lynnxe Murphy. Murphy has always had strong curatorial skills and she has indeed put those to good use in reprising Capsule as community partner of the Biennial in a makeshift location next to the MCA Denver for the exhibition “Objectophilia” which explores the relationship between people and the objects they love. While we don’t know precisely what artists are involved in this equally ambitious affair, we do know that a handful of Plus Gallery artists are participating and are pretty certain it will be one of the more enjoyable exhibitions that supports talent from Colorado (which indeed is considered a part of the Americas last time we checked).

MCA Denver will host a major exhibition firmly entrenched in the ideals of the Biennial called “Energy Effects: Art and Artifacts from the Landscapes of Glorious Excess.” Word has it that this is the first major effort to be co-curated by MCA director Adam Lerner since he took over the institution, and the first time the building will house a group exhibition that spreads throughout the separate galleries therein. “Energy Effects” explores how our society’s abundant space, power, speed, effort, and time become the raw material of both art and industry. The show will include 18 artists of mainly international stature including sculptor Jim Sanborn.

There will undoubtedly be programming that ties into the Biennial concept at various levels throughout the city, I recommend checking the website at biennialoftheamericas.org for calendar listings for the month of July to find out what’s what. Those seeking a verbal update on all things Biennial are welcome to stop by Plus Gallery on June 19th from 11am-12pm for the launch of the River North Art District’s “Riennial” one-day extravaganza. The launch will further expose the visual arts programming from the community for the Biennial, leading into the semi-annual tour of one of Denver’s premier art districts, for more information on that you can visit rivernorthart.com.

Ivar Zeile is the owner and founder of Plus Gallery, one of the leading contemporary galleries in the region since it’s inception in 2001. Plus Gallery will host the Launch Party for the River North Art District’s RIENNIAL celebration. This is your chance to get information on the RiENNIAL OPEN STUDIO TOUR as well as the BIENNIAL of the AMERICAS and how the local community will be involved. Plus Gallery owner Ivar Zeile will discuss his picks for the Biennial of the Americas, followed by a publication release for our current exhibition INVINCIBLE COHORT.

We are very very proud to have been listed in 5280 Magazine this month as one of the top websites to follow for contemporary art in Denver.
